Autoworker Layoff
« on: October 07, 2007, 11:11:34 PM »

My husband is on a 2 week layoff due to slow sales in the auto production industry. Anyone else here in it?

It was suppose to be 3 weeks. They are suppose to come back for 1 week and have the last week of the month off. There has been Contractor and Skilled Tradesmen all over the plant installing new machines and upgrades for the new model.

There are more weeks scheduled before the end of the year. Great time for a paid vacation.

You only get it as a paid vacation if your contract calls for it.

The UAW has just issed a 48 hour strike notice to Chrysler for contract negotiations.
Doesn't sound like good timing to me.

With the economy the way it is today, I can't believe there is a good time for a 'paid vacation'.
Something has to give soon.
A good friend of mine took the early buy out from the Louiseville truck plant after several months of contemplation. He made the right move according to the latest report- the plant is closing.
Good luck to all of you auto workers going through this living hell right now. Too many people bash you for being over paid but the trickle down is what has driven Michigan's economy for years. EVERYONE in Michigan is feeling the effects now.

When I said " take it as a paid vacation " I am looking at the glass as half full. Those layed off were given a return to work date, as oppose to the people that are layed off with no prospect of ever returning to work. Our contract allows the layed off workers to collect unemployment for the 2 weeks they are off and any other down weeks.
I'm sure the auto workers physical bodies need the time off to rebuild. They build cars, not candy bars.

So as I orginally said,, let him enjoy his 2 week vacation, he will be back to bustin his chops.
