I know, I read it and had to leave and when I returned to read it again, it was gone.

It was probably deleted because it is outright slander. Whether or not it's true, it doesn't belong here.

Just after I read it for my husband I came back to post a reply and it was pulled - no clue why but I was also one who was very disgusted with the whole incident - and not because I consider it slander.

Why would you say it's slander?  It would only be slanderous if it was not true.  Do you know this for certain? Also, since it happened in Monroe and the whole blog site has to do w/ what goes on in Monroe - this thread was relevant, and has every right to be here.

I for one have to say that I would like to be informed of what goes on in Monroe County. The kind of things that you will not read in the paper. Kind of a “Buyer Beware” information that I  would like to know and I believe most people would like to know. I think this site is great for letting people ask questions, get other people thoughts and opinions on issues  like the questions that are posted.  Even though there is agreement or not. An advanced "Letters to the Editor", in a way. But I don’t agree with a thread being removed without having a reason. If that is the case, then the administrators of this site needs to set  some rules of what can or cannot be posted.

Of course...things like this is not at all possible in good ol' Monroe, so when someone brings it to light someone will try and dismiss it quickly. Gotta an image to protect right? (sarcasm through and throughout)
This is one of those things I dont like about Monroe.....I took my rose colored glasses off a long time ago! People should always speak up about inhumane acts no matter what and others should listen and do something to change it, not sweep it under a rug and hope nobody uncovers it again!

Here's the original posting:

Today I witnessed the most shameful behavior out of an area business that I have
ever seen.  Jim's Towing located on Franklin Ave, is situated right behind CSDD
on Winchester St.  CSDD provides services to Monroe County area residents that are
physically and developmentally disabled.

CSDD is required to conduct monthly fire drills for safety.  It was the first time
I had witnessed this drill, and since I was in the building I evacuated along with
everyone else.  I stood at the end of Franklin Street to stop any vehicles that
may want to turn until all persons served were safely across the street.  Many of
the people evacuating during this practice drill were using walkers or wheelchairs.

A young gentleman exited Jim's Towing stepped to the corner of the building,
and  lit an M-80.  He was laughing hysterically after the blast startled the crowd
and smoke filled the air.  I witnessed one elderly gentleman using a walker fall
to his knees when the blast sounded.  There were many reactions to the blast, startled
cries, etc. 

The manager of CSDD proceeded to the open garage door at Jim's Towing and asked
if they thought such a prank was funny.  She asked to speak to the manager, a gentleman
replied, "How about the owner, that's me"  They said, "It must
have been a blown tire" and laughed.  When the manager of CSDD said she would
contact the police the owner asked her if she would like the number dialed for her
and again laughed. 

The number was not needed, two officers patrolling on bicycles in the area heard
the blast and immediately came to investigate.

I am appalled that a business owner could support the thoughtless prank aimed at
the disabled residents being served by CSDD.  Do they find it funny to watch an
elderly disabled gentleman fall to his knees in the middle of the road out of fear
when hearing a loud blast.  The reaction of the young man setting off the M-80 was
hysterical laughter. 

I am posting this to appeal to all Monroe County residents.  A local business owner
showing such disregard for the disabled citizens of this county is inexcusable!
I will never frequent this business, and I hope any of you reading this will do
the same, and spread the word.  Word of mouth is a powerful tool.  This story can
be verified by the police department, they were at the scene! 

It is shameful, and I hope anyone who has ever had a disabled family member, friend,
or loved one will take a stand against this cruel harassment of disabled individuals.

If you need car repair or towing I appeal to you to call anyone except this business.
Perhaps they need some quiet time to reflect on compassion and humanity!

The original post was not removed by anyone at The Evening News. This is an open discussion forum and treatment of the disabled seems to us to be an appropriate topic for a community forum. The only other person who could have deleted the item was the author, so we presume that's what happened.

The terms of service on this site outline what is appropriate and what is not. This is an excerpt from the terms:

"You also agree that you will not post content that is fraudulent, promotes information you know to be false and misleading, interferes or disrupts the Web site or services of the Website, is pornographic in nature, is offensive to the Monroe County community, such as content that promotes racism, bigotry, homophobia, hatred or physical harm to any group or individual, or violates any applicable laws."

We interpret this kind of thing broadly, erring on the side of allowing a post whenever possible. And when we do delete something, we notify the party involved and often post an explanation. It doesn't happen very often, because we have a thoughtful and respectful on-line community.

Thank you Dan.  But can the author of the original posting delete the entire thread?  That's what happened in this case.

It doesn't surprise me at all. I am disabled and walk with either a cane or walker. I have been at Big Lots and had my cane kicked out from under me. The teen age boy that did it thought it was real funny. I have a handicap license plate and more than once after getting out of my car at Walmart, I have had people say to me "You sure don't look disabled". If you are in a wheel chair, it is like having a target painted on you ! People will look right at you and then walk right into you while making nasty comments since 'you are in their way"
Stores are no better. Cabela's in Dundee is finally getting their act together. Everythime they had a special sale going on in the parking lot, it ALWAYS covered at least half of their handicap parking spaces ! I guess either enough complaints were made or they finally realized that handicap people spend apend money in their store too because lately they have kept their parking lot sales out of the handi cap spots.
Way too many people in Monroe county think the disabled are only here for their own sick amusment

There is absolutely nothing slanderous about what was posted - it is fact and was witnessed by dozens of employees and people who attend the program, not to mention the police department.

I forwarded the information to AAA - MI.  They are looking into this because why should they be associated with such a low class company.

Yes, something did get deleted on this because I was the first one to respond on it and it indeed posted but is now missing.  Hmmm?
