Breaking News, Monroe declares water emergency...
« on: January 21, 2008, 11:00:21 AM »

The City of Monroe Water Plant is unable to draw water from Lake Erie due to ice buildup.  They are attempting to draw water from the River Raisin, but that will be later today.

All Monroe area water users are getting only stored water at this time.  (better not be any major fires)!!!

How big is the stored water supply (how long does it last)?

I am glad the News reported on this so soon. Industrial facilities have been contacted to conserve water as should everyone at least temporarily. The City will be drawing water from an alternative source as a back up or water can be brought in from south county. Any more information I hear I will be sure to post ASAP.

We just came from Tim Horton's on Monroe Street where there was a panick.  Apparently, the water was being turned off while we were in the drive through.  The manager was panicking and it was all helter skelter.

I didn't realize that the water was going to be actually turned off.  Guess being at work without tv makes me out of the loop.

Is water going to be turned off in the residential areas?

I am surprised they wouldn't shut down.  When bathroom facilities are compromised a business is supposed to shut down I thought.  I definitely can see restaurants and stores.  Factories and autoshops too.  What if there was a fire or other emergency that required water?

does anyone know how they are going to fix this?  I read the article and I guess I missed that.

Admittedly, I know nothing about water treatment beyond what I leaned in science class in school.  The lake freezes every year and the ice piles up.  Surely the water treament people know this.  Why would they not be prepared for this and not put the people in the position of not having water?  Just wondering.   ???

Hubby and I had plans to go out for lunch and some shopping today.  This does not happen often for us and we are disappointed, but we will get over it.   :(

Same here! Handsome and I were trying to decide between Mexican downtown at Senor Cactus, or sushi at Dolce Vita. Guess it will be grilled cheese sandwiches at home.  >:( :(

Frenchtown and South County both have their own water, but you would have to check with them to see if they are having problems.   :)

Well, way down south where I'm at today they aren't faring much better.  They won't have much water in Georgia for sometime.  Drove over some former lakes that now are nothing more than huge, red, mud pits.  It truthfully is very bad down here.  Also, it's not that much warmer here than in Monroe.  They actually still have some snow in places here.
