The third annual Wreaths Across America will be held Saturday Dec. 12 throughout Monroe County.
Hosted by the Monroe Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, the ceremony will be held at noon at Veterans Park in Monroe. Prior to the service, the squadron’s honor guard will place wreaths at each war monument in Monroe, which include the War of 1812 memorial, the Spanish-American War/John Gutmann memorial near St. Mary Catholic Church, the Civil War memorial at Soldiers and Sailors Park and the Vietnam memorial at Heck Park.
The noon service will include members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard placing wreaths at the World Wars monument, Korean War memorial and the War on Terror monument at Veterans Park.
The event is part of a nationwide salute to veterans that includes more than 200 veterans’ cemeteries across the country. Ceremonies will be held simultaneously at noon across America.
Since Monroe does not have a cemetery designated for war veterans, the local ceremony is held annually at each of the war memorials.
