Bedford Township Police Dept
« on: March 17, 2017, 02:44:09 PM »
According to latest BN a committee has formed to study the prospect of Bedford creating their own police dept. The new Supvervisor promised he would address that when ran for office.
The BN provides some crime stats over the last few years.
Things look pretty good and seem to be improving.
The whole issue comes down to cost
Just can't imagine that our own police would make that much of a difference.  If they say they will that's just guessing.

If your goal is to maximize public safety then contracting with the Sheriff Dept is a no-brainer. They handle all of the logistics of buying weapons, uniforms, etc. The contracted deputies get the same great ongoing training that other deputies get. And the Sheriff Dept has a robust command system already established that we don't have to pay for.

The only reason to give that up and start a township/village police department is for revenue generation. And that only works when you have an interstate running through your town. You see; Erie Twp, Dundee, and Luna Pier keep their podunk police departments because they can spend time fill in gaps nabbing speeders from out of town, and that doesn't upset the locals.

But Bedford doesn't have an interstate. And when the township board realizes a budget crunch and starts asking their police to increase ticketing, residents are the ones who will be receiving them. And then public support for renewing the police millage erodes, and ticketing becomes the only way Bedford PD stays funded.

This has turned out very badly for other communities. Does Ferguson, MO ring a bell? They have about 2/3 the population Bedford has. To fund their police they resorted to systematically targeting minorities for minor offenses.

We have got to be out of our minds to consider starting our own police.

Looks like it's getting close to a decision. There is a poll on Twitter asking if people would be in favor of Bedford having its very own police if cost and effectiveness was the same as the current agreement with the Sheriff?
I'm sure they could pull that off but after a few years atch the costs skyrocket.
Let's not fix what isn't broken..

Finally, someone on the board with some sense.

"The Bedford Township Law Enforcement Committee reached that conclusion Thursday night. The numbers to operate its own force work out to 2 to three times the cost of the current contract, said Bedford Township Trustee T.C. Clements, committee chairman."

Let's just hope that they don't decide to do it anyway, thinking local control will still be worth the added cost.
